Mission

An inheritance to be enjoyed

Britain and the wider Western world have handed down a remarkable inheritance of history, literature, faith and ideas. The Albion Society exists to celebrate that inheritance, to pass it on, and to enjoy it in good company.

In York, a city that has seen much of that story, we gather to read, to listen and to talk. We hope to spread an appreciation of the culture and thought that shaped us, among readers of every kind.

We celebrate British history and identity, Western philosophy, the Christian foundations of our culture, Victorian thought, enterprise and the freedom to speak and think. Everyone is welcome, and the Society has no political affiliation.

Our Aims
I

The Fiction Book Club

Monthly readings of great fiction, from Victorian adventure to the novels of the twentieth century, discussed over a glass in good company.

II

Conversation and Debate

Evenings of lively, courteous talk on history, faith, philosophy and the questions that shaped the West, where every view is heard and the argument is part of the pleasure.

III

Speaker Evenings

Talks from historians, authors, clergy and thinkers on the people, ideas and events that made Britain and the Western world, followed by questions and conversation.

IV

Preserving Our Churches

York’s churches have stood for centuries, and many now face neglect or conversion to other uses. We will work to protect them, so that these bastions of Christianity are passed on to future generations.

V

Working Together

We will join forces with other societies, charities and organisations who share our love of history, faith and culture, because what we can protect and celebrate together is far greater than what we can do alone.

Conduct

The Albion Society is open to everyone. We ask all members and guests to:

  1. Welcome everyone. Treat every member and guest with respect, whatever their background or race.
  2. Be courteous. Disagree kindly and listen as well as speak.
  3. Understand our mission. We exist to celebrate British history and culture and Western thought, and members are asked to engage with that purpose in good faith.

The committee may ask anyone who breaks this code to leave.
